Tips for Safe Trick or Treating with Food Allergies

The Non-Negotiables

If you remember nothing else, remember that in the event of an allergic reaction:

  • Keep your epinephrine within reach at all times -- especially important with this treat-intensive holiday.

  • Epi First, Epi Fast  if you suspect a food allergy reaction because quick treatment with epinephrine leads to better outcomes.

  • Carry TWO because sometimes one dose just isn't enough.

Grow Your Halloween Know-How

  • Get Halloween strategies for kids with food allergies in an Allergic Living article by GIna Clowes (@allergymomswithGinaGlowes on FB). Gina Clowes is one of our favorite Allergic Living contributors. You'll find smart ideas like costumes with gloves and supplying neighbors with pre-filled treat bags for your kids in this quick read.

  • We also love FAACTs 12 tips to have a safe Halloween. It's a short and sweet list!

  • Consider candy swap strategies. Switch Witch is a popular approach, or see strategies used by Allergy Force's co-founder to keep the fun in Halloween, minus tears. You can get the Switch Witch book on Amazon just in time for Halloween, too.

  • Sometimes you might see a child struggle to choose a treat from your treat bowl. Please be patient. Sometimes kids live with hidden challenges and need extra time, and maybe even a little help. The Elijah-Alavi Foundation explains this beautifully.

Allergy-Friendly Food-Free Treats

In this season of sugar overload, food-free treats are smart alternatives. The below lists are a treasure trove of ideas for inspiration. It's still not too late to source some:

  • Allergic Living offers up inspired ideas for food-free treats for 2025.

  • FARE also offers a solid list with food-free teat ideas plus printables.

  • Amazon is a great source for non-food Halloween treats and if you're a prime member you can order today for tomorrow.

  • Target and Walmart offer a selection of Teal Decor — think treat buckets, lawn signs, teal pumpkins — in support of the Teal Pumpkin Project.

  • Here are free Halloween coloring sheets you can download. Roll them up, tie them with ribbon and you'll have a smile-bringer of a treat to handout.

Halloween Activity Ideas

What we love about holidays, is that you create your own playbook. Your holidays don't have to look like everyone else's to be full of magic.

Get Creative in the Kitchen!

  • Get in the kitchen and bake with the kids! Make these monstrously good and allergy-friendly Frankenstein Brownies from Allergic Living Kitchen Craft series by Ashley Smith. More crafting than baking, her step-by-step instructions make success a given!

  • Here's a fun project to do with the kids from The Pretty Bee — make allergy-friendly caramel apples. Add your own creative twist, dipping the 'caramel' coated apples in coconut, sunflower seeds, or allergy-friendly sprinkles while the caramel coating is still hardening.

Get Crafty

  • Go to Home Depot, Lowes, or Michaels, buy some teal paint, and give your pumpkins a teal make-over. Decorate them with sparkles, ribbons, and bows if you don't want to carve them. Adorable or scary, how will you decorate your masterpiece? Here are some clever ideas for inspiration from the Allergic Living archives.

  • Why not host a crafting party for your child and his/her friends? Make Ghosts, Paper Pumpkins, and Vampire Puppets with out a huge investment of time or money in supplies to make the crafts. (These crafts are perfect for keeping small hands busy and boredom at bay, too!)

Let Them Eat Pumpkin

We love pumpkin anything! We've curated a list of must-try pumpkin recipes that will deliciously celebrate The Great Pumpkin's arrival. Pumpkin is full of vitamins, minerals, omega-3's, and fiber, too. So sneak some tasty nutrition into smile-bringing foods kids will love:

To Kick-Start The Day

➡️These Pumpkin Pancakes called to us when we watched Lindiwe Lewis, founder of Behind the Allergy on IG, make them on an Insta reel. Get her recipe and you're in for a happy and healthy start to your day.

➡️The warm spices with the sweet pumpkin in these Pumpkin Muffins from 'Just What We Eat' are a delicious way to start the day! Measure the dry ingredients and line your muffin tins the night before to speed up making them in the AM. Nothing's more satisfying than sending the kids off to school knowing their tank is full.

➡️This Vegan, Gluten-Free Pumpkin Bread from 'Eating by Elaine' is perfect for fall — spiced just right, it's an easy-to-make, moist bread that's refined sugar-free. It's perfect for breakfast (and snacking, too!)

➡️This Pumpkin Streusel Coffee Cake recipe from 'The Pretty Bee' begs you to settle in for a leisurely brunch and a warm mug of coffee. Definitely a treat for a slow-start morning.

Pick-Me-Ups

➡️Roasted Pumpkin Seeds are a quick and healthy snack for the whole family, so don't throw out your pumpkin seeds when you carve pumpkins. This three-ingredient recipe from 'Simply Recipes' has tips for easily separating the pumpkin strings from the seeds before baking + perfectly salting them inside and out.

➡️This Allergy-friendly Pumpkin Maple Cheesecake Dip recipe is from one of our favorite allergy-friendly chefs, 'Allergy Dragon'. It's an easy way to keep the kids' hungries at bay after school or when you're on-the-go. Dipping makes it fun to eat. Pick their favorite allergy and/or celiac-safe dippers like apple or pear slices, pretzels, graham crackers, or banana chunks!

➡️Need an energy boost late in the day? This Dairy Free Pumpkin Spice Latte recipe from 'Good Food Baddie' is your answer. Just 6 ingredients and quick to make, you're about 5 minutes away from ahhhhhhhh. Top with allergy-friendly whip cream or cinnamon if you really want to indulge. Who needs Starbucks?

What's for Dinner?

➡️This creamy Allergy-Friendly Pumpkin Soup recipe from 'Allergy Dragon' is simple to make and filling to eat. You can add protein like chicken or cannellini beans, too, and consider dinner made. (Or not!)

➡️We love a bowl of creamy pasta and this Creamy Pumpkin Sage Pasta recipe from 'Karissa's Vegan Kitchen' doesn't disappoint. It uses coconut milk for creaminess and you can make it gluten-free by using your favorite gluten-free pasta.

➡️Here's a one-pot meal that's warm and satisfying — One-Pot Pumpkin Curry. With this recipe from 'Eating by Elaine' you can have dinner on the table in 30 minutes. Serve with rice, or explore other wholesome gluten-free grains like quinoa or buckwheat. Pro-tip: An Instant Pot or rice cooker makes cooking grains easy. Make extra so you have cooked grain on hand for tomorrow.

➡️This recipe for Easy Roasted Pumpkin from 'Healthy Recipes' offers two ways to roast pumpkin. Though it's a tad labor intensive, slicing and peeling your sugar pumpkin for roasting is definitely worth it. Or, if you're pressed for time, just slice your pumpkin in half, remove the seeds, and roast the halves face down. Delicious results either way!

Sweet Finales

➡️This recipe for Gluten-Free, Vegan Pumpkin Cake topped with dairy-free 'cream cheese' frosting will delight your family and friends. Megan Lavin, the creator behind 'Allergy Awesomeness' never disappoints with her well-tested, easy-to-follow, allergy-friendly recipes. Made in 13×9 pan, this one's great for sharing.

➡️Pumpkin Pie is crowd pleaser and this gluten-free, vegan recipe from 'Strength and Sunshine' is no exception. The recipe links to a from-scratch gluten free crust, but if you're short on time, you can always keep it simple and use a pre-made crust.
