Tips for Safe Trick or Treating with Food Allergies
Keep your epinephrine at your fingertips at all times. Carry TWO. If you suspect an allergic reaction Epi First, Epi Fast. Quick use of epinephrine leads to better outcomes.
We love FAACTs 12 tips to have a safe Halloween. Plus, get 9 actionable Halloween strategies for kids with food allergies from FARE. Consider costumes with gloves, give the kids a good dinner before heading out to fuel their trick-or-treating, and carry wipes and some safe candy in your pocket as you make the rounds.
Allergic Living publishes an allergy-friendly candy list that's vetted directly with manufacturers so you can feel confident when you buy. Shop links make them easy to source. We especially love the skull candy bracelets this year, plus it has non-candy snacks like chocolate covered pretzels and chips! Allergy Awesomeness also has a list of her family's allergy-friendly candy favorites.
Consider candy swap strategies. See strategies used by Allergy Force's co-founder to keep the fun in Halloween, minus the tears. Includes pros and cons for each strategy. Switch Witch is a popular strategy and the 'At My Table' website offers a clear explanation of how it works. You can get the Switch Witch book on Amazon in time for Halloween, too.
Sometimes you might see a child struggle choosing a treat. Please be patient. Sometimes kids have invisible challenges and need extra time, even a little help. The Elijah-Alavi Foundation explains this beautifully in an IG post you can read in under a minute to raise your awareness/EQ.
Allergy-Friendly & Inclusive Food-Free Treats
Food-free treats are beautifully inclusive ways to welcome trick-or-treaters and it's not too late to buy them.
Allergic Living offers up inspired food-free treat ideas.
FARE also offers a solid list with food-free teat ideas plus printables.
Download and print free Halloween coloring sheets. Roll them, tie them with ribbon and you've got an fun (& cost-effective) treat that will spread smiles.
Amazon is a reliable source for food-free Halloween treats. Oriental Trading and CVS, too! More and more teal options are available with each passing year as food allergy awareness grows.
You might wonder, why teal for Halloween? FARE is behind the national Teal Pumpkin Project that's a simple way to make trick-or-treating welcoming for everyone. When you put a teal pumpkin out it signals you have non-food treats for the diet-restricted kids who haunt your doorstep. It all began with the Basalone family from East Tennesse who wanted a better Halloween experience for their son with multiple, severe food allergies. They shared their brainchild with the East Tennessee food allergy community. FARE took the initiative national in 2014 and it's grown in reach and awareness ever since.
An Apple A Day...
Apples can put sweetness in your day plus add nutrients, antioxidants and fiber that are important for long-term good health.
There are more than 2,500 apple varieties grown in the U.S. (~7,500 worldwide), though only a fraction (about 100) are cultivated commercially, and fewer than 12 dominate standard grocery store shelves in the U.S. (www.usapple.org) Choose your flavor profile, from honey-sweet Golden Delicious apples, to sweet-tart McIntosh apples, to the zesty-tart of green Granny Smith apples, and everything in between.
Consider Halloween Dinner Planned
(With Apple Everything to Tickle Tastebuds)
Here's a mix-and-match dinner menu to fuel your family through a night of trick-or-treating fun. From A to Z, you'll find tasty, not-too-hard to make options that'll delight all the tastebuds gathered at your table.
For Starters
Start with a comforting soup or zesty salad to warm-up the family for the Main Event.
This creamy (but dairy-free) 'Butternut Squash and Apple Soup' from Veggie Inspired caught our eye and we like that it's something you can make ahead of time and warm-up to serve. You can go light or heavy on the spices, too, adjusting to your family preferences. This is definitely some comfort food that'll warm the kids up from the inside out before you venture out to trick-or-treat.
Or, start with this vegan Waldorf-style apple salad, of course minus the dairy and the nuts. It's the perfect combination of crunchy, creamy, sweet, and tangy. We think this 'Vegan Waldorf Salad' recipe from Strength and Sunshine with only six ingredients is a win-win. Mix up your apple and grape choices, red and green, to make it extra pretty. Best of all? It takes less than 10 minutes to make. (Plus hot tip? It makes a fine dessert, too!)
The Main Event
With so many moving parts on Halloween night, we think a one-pan dish you can pop in the oven and pretty much 'forget' is your path to overload survival. This 'Chicken with Sweet Potatoes Apples and Brussels Sprouts' from Well Plated is one-pan simple. Just chop and toss the veggies & apples together on the pan, place marinated chicken breasts on top, then bake. No babysitting required. The drippings from the roasted chicken add rich flavor to the apples & veggies and the herbs and spices make your home smell like fall.
The Sweet Finale
We were inspired by these two recipes, both simple with not too many steps or ingredients. Plus, they can be made ahead of time. Both are 100% kid pleasing (grown-ups, too!): Apples with Caramel Dipping Sauce or Apple Crisp.
One of our favorite allergy-friendly recipe innovators is Megan Lavin (Allergy Awesomeness). Her two-ingredient instant pot Carmel Dipping Sauce is fun to eat with apple slices or drizzle on allergy-friendly ice cream. Or for the grown-ups in the crowd, go wild and drizzle it into a cup of freshly brewed coffee for an energy boost before you hit the streets with your trick-or-treaters. The instant pot does all the work on this one!
Eating with Food Allergies is an allergy-aware and celiac-aware recipe innovator and recipes are easy to make. Peeling and slicing the apples takes a bit of patience (being honest here), but the crumble mixture goes together in a snap. You can adjust the spices to your family's tastes. It takes about an hour and your done. Make in the morning and serve before you head out to haunt the streets.

From spooky food-free treats without mice type ingredients to decipher, to safety tips to see you through trick-or-treating without mishap, to a dinner plan to fuel you through fright night fun— you’ve got everything you need for a Halloween full of magic, mischief, and memories!
Wishing you happy, healthy & inclusive haunting (and don’t forget your epinephrine!)
